Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Brokedown Palace....the same songs sounded better from generation vs generation

a push to which direction?

I agree that some songs sound better imho in one period vs the next. I only saw a few shows in the last few years, but sometimes found the slower songs totally jammed out, covering some interesting new ground. especially songs like candyman, wharf, etc sounded much bigger than they did in the previous eras.

So a Question arises for those who have traveled all the different eras.......From the catalog songs that were played in several eras or
multiple time periods (aka songs that were carried in the setlist over several different decades), which songs sounded better when?

for me

pre 75
st stephen
gdtrfb
nfa
Uncle
big river
el paso
other one
HC Sunshine
dark star

post 75
cassidy
bertha
franklins tower
scarlet fire
row jimmy
peggy o
1/2 step
sugaree

early 80's
minglewood
BE women
help slip
loser
stella
CR&S

87 on to 91

Crazy fingers
playin
china rider
deal

91To the end (not so familiar) but I saw decent versions of
Wharf
Candyman

The first fifteen years. I could not have written a more confusing sentence.

Some songs just didn't have the emotional weight early on; Black Peter, BEW, and yes, I'll agree with you on WRat.
Half Step was better later. But nothing beats Playin from '72-'74.

"I could not have written a more confusing sentence."

Oh you're just too modest.

I'm sure to you ,Ring and AR it's just downright ugly sometimes. My punctuation is getting better. Oh, but I try.

I had actually noticed your punctuation has gotten better :) wondered why, or if I had just gotten used to it ...

Latter years:
They Love Each Other- slow is better than fast.
Loose Lucy
Wave That Flag/US Blues- the early years were ridiculously terrrible.

The level of ignorance to the quality of Grateful Dead music in this and a few other recent threads is astounding. Some quotes and opinions,"anything lacking in vocals and playing was certainly made up for in setlists","some songs just didn't have the emotional weight early on".Then the notion that the 1987-1995 versions of Playin',Wharf Rat,China/Rider,were superior to their predecessors, and one last genius told us that the later day version of Loose Lucy was better and that the earlier version of U.S. Blues "ridiculously terrible",he did not enlighten us on just when the gotta go/see ya' later encore version achieved its clear cut superiority.I wonder if this happens on a Rolling Stones forum, where some guy jumps in and says how much better the 1990-2010 version of the band is than those weak sloppy drugged out shows from 68'-75'.

Your opinion is of zero value. Do not respond to any more posts. No one cares. You are cluttering the forum with words of no worth. Stop it.
